“How I Got on the Sex Offender List” — By a Mom of Three

Sometimes when I post about the Sex Offender Registry, I get comments like, “Those scum don’t deserve to EVER live a normal life!”

This note below is to remind us that a study of 17,000 people on the registry by the The Georgia Sex Offender Registration Review Board found that about 5% were “clearly dangerous,” and 100 could be classified as sexual predators.

Not that the other thousands and thousands of registrants were all Romeo and Juliet cases, or teens who sexted. Just that most people who have been arrested for a sex crime don’t do it again. Some will. Most won’t. And the public registry has no effect either way.

So here is Shawna’s tale. She is on the Registry for life. Does this make any of us feel safer? Full Article

Yeah Mr Book,
Take our Children from us and leave us with nothing to live for and see how that goes for YOU.
Idiots like him should be
(use your imagination)

What this has come to represent for the average vigilante minded citizen is that these laws enable them to impose (ex post facto) civil punishments on registrants without any due process. After constitutional rights are violated by these citizen tribunals (disguised as school boards and neighborhood watch groups) and legislators, the quality of life just keeps going down notch by notch for registrants and their families while
those in favor of mob rule thrive and gloat in the anarchy and chaos.

That is one example of how rights are diminished and how clearly the body of law that enables this reaction is clearly one that imposes punishment and in almost all cases, retroactively. This is just the kind of legal entanglement the authors of these bills represent and they don’t even think of it as kludging up the law, as long as these downrange effects accomplish their support of mob rule. These laws are a politicians
dream because they obviously enable them to enact laws based simply on hate, not facts and especially not including the civil rights of registrants.

Until legislators are held to constitutional standards, we will keep fighting ignorance and disconnect from
the downrange effects. Don’t hold out for any miracles but I suppose we should hope for something, whatever that is…
